For a while now I’ve been wanting to do a big challenge, don’t get me wrong the challenges I have attempted so far have been just that, challenges, but having completed them I’ve been left wanting to attempt something bigger and dare I say it “life changing”. After a bit of research online I found lots of inspirational stories about people that had run across countries and continents, so I started to think that I wanted my challenge to be along a similar line and include running a long distance across multiple days or weeks but I still had no idea about the where or how.
My earliest childhood memory is of a family holiday with my Mum, Nanny and Grandad to the Swiss Alps, which I believe led to my love of the mountains, and my plan has always been to go back to Switzerland with my absolute bucket list race being UTMB, and so slowly the idea of running from or too Switzerland started to form in my head…..
Fast forward to the end of 2018 and suddenly life was thrown upside down with my Grandad passing away, almost instantly I had a light bulb moment and I made the decision there and then that I would run from the place of that first childhood memory with him, Leysin, Switzerland back to the town he lived in here in Norfolk, Dereham. A couple of months have passed and what I thought was still a bit of a dream has turned into lots of planning, lots of checking maps and lots of reality, and so From Mountains To Molehills was born.
Starting in September I will be running from Leysin in Switzerland back to Dereham in Norfolk, a journey of around 631 miles. My goal is to run between 15 to 20 miles a day, although I have no set target for time if I can manage that daily milage I’m expecting the trip to take me around a month to complete meaning that I should finish in Dereham market place at the beginning of October.
2018 was also a tough year for me because my mental health took a bit of a nose dive, and the anxiety and depression that I have carried with me all of my life came to a head. It got to a point where I was pulling out of races, the one thing that usually helps me to keep on top of life, purely because I just didn’t want to be around people, being in this situation lead me to research what as a nation we are suffering with and what help is available. I began to realise that there are many different ways people need help in the UK and this has lead to me running this challenge and raising money for the 3 great charities below, all of which are doing work to help people with problems that I have faced or am facing in my own personal life at some point.
The main aim of From Mountains To Molehills is to raise funds for the charities but also to raise awareness of the great work they are doing, so please please share this page as much as possible so that hopefully someone out there struggling can get the help they need
CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably ( CALM) is leading a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45
NORWICH AND CENTRAL NORFOLK MIND We are the mental health charity that believes no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We work to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, support people in their recovery and champion better services for all.
THE RUNNING CHARITY – Homelessness can happen at any time and to anyone. And when it happens to a young person it can affect them for the rest of their life. At least 83,000 young people in the UK are homeless right now and, with homeless young people almost twice as likely to die as their non-homeless peers, there is an urgent need to push for change. We believe that running builds resilience, confidence and self-esteem and use this to improve the lives of 16-25 year-olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
